Lean Times In Lankhmar, The Playable Braunstein Hidden In The Backdrop
Returning to the ring against '"@RumpDM', I dug deeper than Conan and choose '"Fritz Leiber’s, Lean Times In Lankhmar'
—as my weapon for this round.
This short story—follows Fafhrd & the Grey Mouser through Lankhmar’s The Street Of The God, after the iconic duo split over financial pressures. Seeking a new life of solace, Fafhrd (a northern Barbarian) becomes acolyte to Bwadres, the last priest of Issek of the Jug. Meanwhile Mouser, (the more cunning of the duo) finds himself a lieutenant to Pulg, the street’s the chief Extortioner.
Personally, I was intrigued by the hidden braunstein playing out in the background, rather than the story itself. At first I was going to discuss the various factions at play. But that wouldn’t make for a very compelling entry for the “Kang Of The Ring Tournament”. No we DESERVE something grander, something bolder!
So How about a small Braunstein Inspired by the text instead.
Scenario: The Street Of The Gods buzzes with excitement—rumors about the Cult Of The Jug’s sudden, new found popularity flow like a river. Each night, Bwadres preaches atop his keg, warning of the Gods OF Lankhmar and proclaiming redemption for those who drink the waters of peace from Issek’s Jug.
Pulg (T 11), the cheif extortioner.
Grilli (T 5), Pulg’s most trusted lieutenant
The Gray Mouser (T 7), Pulg’s newest Lieutenant, and former friend of Fafhrd.
10 unnamed enforcers (F 1).
8 unnamed informers (B 1).
Goals:
Collect a suitable 10% from all cults.
To humiliate Bwadres and Fafrd, ensuring they don’t continue to dodge paying their dues.
Win Condition:
Thoroughly embarrassed Bwadres and Fafhrd, not enough that they stop collecting donations from onlookers. But enough to ensure they play their dues.
Basharat (T 9), chief Pulg’s rival.
1 unnamed lieutenant (T 4)
8 unnamed enforcers (F 1) v 5 unnamed informers (B 1)
Goals:
Collect a suitable 10% from all cults.
To humiliate Bwadres and Fafhrd, ensuring they don’t continue to dodge paying their dues.
Win Condition:
To usurp Pulg’s claim to tithe from Bwadres and Fafrd, by collecting from the duo before Pulg.
Bwadres (C 9), the last priest of Issek Fafhrd (F 7), a brutish northerner sworn to sobriety and to abstain from killing his foes.
Goals:
Purchase the temple of Aarth, the grandest temple on the Street Of The Gods
Win Condition:
Collect enough funds to purchase the temple of Aarth.
There are as many Godlets in Lankhmar as there are specks of sand in the great eastern desert. Players interested in playing a Competing Cult should bring their own ideas about their cult to the table (must be centered around a martyr's messiah like figure).
